A Trump presidency: I hate to say I told you so ... but I told you so

Almost a year ago, I saw the inevitable coming.

It was kind of like looking into a crystal ball that's a bit murky and you can't quite make out the big picture. But what you can make out is pretty clear.
Trump may be a spectacle, but we should be watching (via qctimes.com, 1.27.16)
You’re dead wrong if you think Donald Trump doesn’t have a shot.

The business mogul has inspired a nation tired of fighting overseas and scared for national security. Trump is eschewing a large block of Muslim Americans and Hispanic voters through vocal racism and targeted verbal attacks on his event protesters and demonstrators. ... (Read more)
I wrote that ahead of the Iowa Caucus, an event that typically is the first indication of a political candidate's moxy. And a key indicator on who the party is going to back. Cruz came out on top during the Caucus, but it was the runner up that surprised a few folks.

You see, in a sea of 12 Republican candidates, the guy everyone thought was a joke, was the second biggest vote-getter.

Iowa, filled with farmers and small towns, leans pretty heavily right, with a few larger cities able to maybe pull a little to the left. Trumps hate and vitriol was swaying the Hawkeye State. And while Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio had substantially better political chops, Trump would eventually steam roll the GOP.

(The Democratic race was hugely divisive, and one many consider the first chink in Bernie Sander's armor.)

I can't tell you what the next four years hold for us or Trump. What I can tell you is that the pull for people to jump into the political pool has greatly increased, and hopefully a polarizing presidency encourages other people to start fighting for the causes in which they believe.

Reliving old stories, and getting the itch to start writing about music again

I've been reliving some of my old stories. I'm reminded of how much I miss writing out music and bands.

In May 2016, I got to talk to Emily Greene, of Riothorse Royale, about the band's music, the friendship she shares with Madi Diaz, etc., ahead of their show at Daytrotter, a music venue in Davenport, Iowa.

Duo combines talents to create Riothorse Royale’s haunting rhythms (via qctimes, 5.25.16)
Madi Diaz and Emily Greene pooled their collaborative songwriting talents and the result is Riothorse Royale’s slow-and-steady tempo and hauntingly layered vocal melodies.
The band’s success is due in large to their individual talents, but also their ability to work together and traveling thousands of miles from tour stop to tour stop to perform live.

...
Riothorse Royale draws comparison to the sister-indie-power-pop band Haim and also Lana Del Rey, but deliver a slightly darker spin.

“We’re on the same page creatively: When someone has an idea, the other one is quick to say ‘Oh yeah, I’ve got this one too,’" Greene said. "So we bounce back and forth off each other. We’re both really grateful for it."  ... (Read more)

Riothorse Royale released a five-song EP, "The Guest House," in 2015. They were working on a studio album, but haven't released any details.
